Your plant identification book

A field journal for kids

Craft: FAQ

For this craft you will gather all of the nature pictures you took with the iNaturalist app during your hike and make a small booklet called a field journal. The booklet will contain a picture and a few pieces of new information that you learned about each plant. You will be creating your very own plant identification book!

You will need the following materials: printed pictures of the plants you identified, pencil, paper, scissors, stapler, and a glue stick (optional: markers, stickers, etc.)

(For pictures that go along with the steps of the craft for more details, look under the online guide section and click on the pdf labeled 'craft pictures')

Step 1: Gather pictures of the 5 plants you identified and print them out. After you have printed them, carefully cut them out (you may need help from an adult to do this).

Step 2: Research 3 facts about each of your plants using the internet or books and write them down on a separate piece of paper (later you will copy them into your booklet).

Step 3: Get 3 pieces of paper and fold the shorter sides together (when folded they should look like the pages of a book). Then staple them together so you have a small booklet.

Step 4: On the very first page of your booklet write "(your name)'s Plant Identification Book". This is the cover of your book, you may decorate it however you like. Get creative!

Step 5: Now take the pictures of your plants and glue one to each page of the booklet (you can use the back and the front of each page)

Step 6: Under each picture write the three facts about the plant that you learned. Above the picture write the plant name.

Step 7: Now you can decorate the pages of your booklet however you like.

Now that you have created your very own Plant Identification Booklet you can take it on future hikes to help you identify the plants you see along the trail. Feel free to add more pages to your book as you discover all kinds of new plants!
